The logical time to do it would be with the link line slab track renewal but that’s not happening any time soon.

Where about does the slab track renewal need to take place, between what stations?

In the underground from Leeds St to St James Old station, I believe

RE: Merseyrail
One of the Ormskirk to Hunts Cross circuits has been operating as an 8 Car Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, commencing the start of the Selective Door Operation on the 777 fleet. 777016 & 041 ran this circuit Tue and Wed. 011 & 021 on Thursday. Unfortunately, the 8 car unit had to be pulled from service mid afternoon on both Wed and Thur as I understand due to a fault with the doors.
From what I witnessed when I took a trip to Hunts Cross and back, announcements on board train, both audio and on display, very clear of the set-up, which affects Cressington station in both directions (1 unit set of doors wont open), St Michaels towards Hunts Cross (rear door won't open) and Aigburth towards Liverpool (rear door won't open). There is also an information poster, attached below, regarding the situation at Cressington displayed at the station.
No sign of the return of Hunts Cross to Southport running any time soon.

BBC news is reporting that RMT members on Merseyrail are balloting today for strike action on 3 days from tomorrow because of a pay dispute. If it takes place, there will only be a limited service on the Southport line for the Open Golf on Sat and Sun

RE: Merseyrail
It would appear no trains running on Hunts Cross line, past Liverpool Central in both directions, from WC 12th October 2026 for 4 weeks. Presumably due to the new station Liverpool Baltic.

No, it’s for tunnel repairs and signalling works

This line will also suffer once the construction of Liverpool Baltic gets underway. I feel sorry for passengers on this line, especially given all the chaos with 8 car running. Shame!

RE: Merseyrail
Apparently the issue with 8 cars at Cressington is to do with a trackside beacon that presumably stops certain doors opening.
Northern’s 331s can be manually selected to open/not open so I guess Merseyrail’s issues are linked to the original DOO specifications.
