RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - knutstransport - 21/03/2018 17:13 Some news on the May timetable changes. There's various articles on this but I don't think any one article gives the complete list https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/new-train-service-help-scouse-14441335 https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/news/leeds-news/northern-announces-plans-double-train-14441254 https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/northern-postpones-key-rail-improvements-in-yorkshire-and-blames-delays-to-manchester-electrification-scheme-1-9075681 Changes postponed include the Chester extension of a Calder Valley service, while changes going ahead include Alderley Edge to Wigan (!), half-hourly services to Buxton plus a n hourly train to Hazel Grove only, part of the proposed Harrogate and Atherton line improvements and the Manchester Airport to Liverpool via Warrington service (replacing the current TPE service via Warrington.) Ones of particular note are all Macclesfield and Mid-Cheshire line changes being postponed, including Sunday improvements. For those who don't realise the additional Macclesfield services would be electric so the shortage of diesel units isn't a good excuse, it seems the reason they've been postponed is because the original plan was to run the additional services through to Blackpool via Bolton (as electric services) but as that can't happened it seems Northern have postponed the change instead of running an EMU shuttle in the mean time. Also Sunday improvements on both Mid-Cheshire and Macclesfield don't require additional units - in fact most Mid-Cheshire services are 4 car on Sunday so if Northern can run a 2 hourly 4 car service why not an hourly 2 car service? Regarding Mid-Cheshire services the off-peak extra services aren't the biggest issue. It's the counter-peak flow services at peak times. Currently the 15:59, 16:59 and 18:04 services from Chester to Manchester all get overcrowded by the time they've reached the Greater Manchester boundary. RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - St Helens Rider - 21/03/2018 19:03 Also no mention of Liverpool - Blackpool resuming - wonder if there is further doubts on the completion date of Preston - Blackpool electrification. Just an oversight would of thought as the Liverpool-Blackpool service isn't a new service as such it's just the service restarting after the closure of the line, electrification still on course to be completed mid April after the 3 week delay RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - St Helens Rider - 22/03/2018 08:22 (22/03/2018 00:28)Gordon V Wrote: Just an oversight would of thought as the Liverpool-Blackpool service isn't a new service as such it's just the service restarting after the closure of the line, electrification still on course to be completed mid April after the 3 week delay Since that post I have seen communications from Northern confirming this will be happening, surprised the Echo didn't pick it up considering it's a service from their patch. RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - knutstransport - 22/03/2018 09:47 Liverpool to Blackpool isn't really an improvement - it's reinstating a through service that was temporarily split due to a shortage of units. RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - knutstransport - 22/03/2018 15:47 Letter distributed by Liam Sumpter, regional director at Northern for the central region. Quote:Further to my previous correspondence last month I wanted to write to you again to provide you with an update on our May 18 timetable introduction. In addition to the above MCRUA has been told morning peak time extras on the Mid-Cheshire line will continue to terminate at Stockport but the unit running the first service will run back to Chester as an additional service. They've also been told they'll be a reduction in capacity on some services - 4 car workings on Saturday becoming much rarer and the c.15.00 Chester to Manchester being operated by a 2 car 142 instead of a 4 car 150, something the chairman has raised concerns about as that is likely to mean passengers get left behind due to the train being too full. RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - St Helens Rider - 01/04/2018 16:04 Rare traction on Preston - Blackpool South service this afternoon in the form of 158861 - sheer luxury compared to the normal Pacer on this route. No more changing trains at Preston. RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North) - childwallblues - 03/04/2018 05:56 150130 and 150131 have now arrived at Newton Heath. These are the last of the FGW units to transfer to Northern. 150144 is now in the Northern livery.
